The sun has a new stylish enemy that is based in the heart of Atlanta. Last night I had the pleasure of attending Red’s Outfitters Official Launch Party at a private Atlanta mansion. The event was definitely a young southern to do with sexy twenty somethings walking around in the hottest shades to hit the scene this season. The event set up shop in a picturesque backyard that seemed to be straight out of Garden & Gunn.

About Red’s and it’s founders: The idea of Red’s was created when two roommates wanted stylish, high quality sunglasses in colors that represented their lifestyle. Whether it was a childhood beach destination or their alma mater, they wanted colors that compliment their loyalties. From there, an idea was born to create sunglasses in classic styles they loved, in colors nobody else had. The guys had family in the fashion business, so they decided to see what it would take to make their own shades.

Suddenly, the unexpected struck and one of the founders drowned while practicing breath holding exercises for an upcoming spear fishing trip. After this tragedy, his roommate talked to his surviving brother and a best friend about continuing their vision, just what Whitner would’ve wanted. Raw Love Fashion Show

I am thrilled to be Co-Charing the second annual Raw Love Fashion Show benefiting Wish for Wendy on Wednesday April 25, 2012 from 7:00p.m.-9:00p.m. The star-studded event not only features Atlanta’s socialites and trendsetters walking the runway at Opera in Raw Denim to the beats of DJ Mad Flip but also highlights lines from Lady Couture and Luna-C.

The event is hosted by Trey Humphreys and Ace Emerson – a guaranteed
show stopping, inappropriate performance. The show will kick off with a vocal performance from New York City’s very own Chloe Cahill.

Donations of $15 are requested at the door. The donation goes directly to Wish for Wendy and gets you a Sinless Margarita, bites from Fig Jam (cold shrimp presentation, crudités of vegetables and dip, pork carnitas and tortellini with cheese in a cream sauce), delicious cupcakes from Sugar Lilly Bakery and of course a killer fashion show!

A Cut Above The Rest

I am a recovering entrepreneur but I still understand the blood, sweat and tireless hours that go into creating a unique and meaningfull business.  When I discover honest and hard-working entrepreneurs I like to help in any way possible. In this case I came across the story of two college friends that I knew were destined for success.  I can’t say enough about this power couple and their amazing new business.

Both Emily Ann and John were superstars in college and became the perfect sweetheart couple and ended up marrying and residing Mobile, AL.  After working a few years they placed their house on the market thinking maybe it would sell but for 10 months they didn’t get a single bite.  After 2 years of working for Distinguished Young Women, Emily Ann decided it was time for her to move in a new direction. At the same time she decided to leave her job their house which received no bites in 10 months had sold.  They were both faced with the idea of buying a new “forever” house and continuing  to lead their normal lives or challenging themselves to an amazing adventure.  They decided to take the leap into the unknown that has since led them on cross-country drives, bunking with friends, meeting new people and recently settling in Texas to start Tin Roof Cutting Boards.

Tin Roof Cutting Boards started as an idea from one of John’s business acquaintances that owned a sawmill and created cutting boards for family as gifts. Emily Ann is now running the online store, which sells a variety of cutting boards. The Van Michael Experience: After visiting the salon for the Aveda preview I was eager to check out what this coveted salon had to offer. After waiting for a few minutes I was visited by a manager with a complimentary gift thanking me for trying the salon. After a few minutes I met my stylist who was everything I had hoped. We had a great consultation and started our courtship of my hair style. I was pleasantly surprised when I sat down in a massage chair to get my hair washed. One word: AMAZING.  When the cutting process began Jonathan was 100% upfront about everything he was doing to my hair and we also had great banter! I absolutely loved my cut and made my next appointment before leaving!

Everywhere I go I am hearing Farm to table, praise to local business owners and new fabulous products popping up in local neighborhoods. I am a huge fan of local businesses and want to share a few of my favorite townies with  you!

-EAT-


Farm Burger- Trendy burger shops are popping up all over town but Farm Burger is the only one in town with 100% grass-fed beef. Their cows are raised regionally and never fed hormones, antibiotics or grain. The vegetables and other menu items are grown locally.   I proclaim Farm Burger has the best burger in town! They now have two locations, Decatur and Buckhead. I am partial to the Decatur location because it is the original and I think the food just tastes better!

Empire State South- The Dawgs fans in Atlanta are familiar with Five & Ten and The National in Athens and have been quick to take to Chef Hugh Acheson’s newest creation. Empire State South is a modern twist on southern cuisine. All ingredients are sourced from regional farms. Must try items: Jars of pork rillette, trout mousse, pickles, pimento cheese & bacon marmalade and boiled peanut hummus are the best starter on the menu! As an entrée I would recommend ESS Goat Cheese Pecan Ravioli or the Riverview Farms Pork Loin. After you have eaten till your heart’s content work off a few calories playing a game of bocci ball.

Miller Union- A local resident in the up and coming westside of Atlanta, Miller Union truly has built its business on the relationship between farmer and chef.  The menu changes weekly and is based on the weekly harvest. Start your experience with creamy grits fritters with country ham & thomasville tomme or sorghum glazed pork belly, smoked cabbage, kumquat & pickled beet.  For your main dish try country captain chicken, peanuts, toasted coconut, green tomato chutney or vermilion snapper, carrot, sunchoke, country ham & arugula pistou. Don’t leave without trying chocolate-coconut macaroon torte, spiced rum ice cream.

-DRINK-

Victory H2O- Water has never made me feel so great! Victory H2O is the brain child of a pro athlete trainer who lives right here in Atlanta. I had the privilege of meeting the owner and learn the amazing benefits of drinking this enhanced electrolyte water. Great to get you through work outs and help your body recover!

Sinless Cocktails- If you follow my blog, facebook or twitter page you have heard me mention Sinless Cocktails a few times. Not only are the Sinless peeps great friends of mine but I absolutely love the low-calorie factor with big calorie taste. Sinless is now available in strawberry and regular margarita mix and sour mix.  Sinless is available at most local bars including all Tin Lizzy’s, Buckhead Saloon and East Andrews as well as most package stores.

Kill Cliff- Tagged as the worlds only anti-inflammatory supporting drink, Kill Cliff was created right here in Atlanta by some good ole Georgia boys. Created as a recovery drink to help athletes perform better and recover faster, Kill Cliff has taken over gyms all over the country. Whynatte- Why have a Starbucks when you could have a Whynatte Latte to get your day rolling! It is a great tasting, 100 calorie alternative to the fancy over priced coffee shop drinks. Founded by two local brothers, Whynatte has made it’s mark in Atlanta and beyond. Next time you are out on the town try a fire in the whole or a mother fluffer- I will let you figure out what those are on your own :)

Raw Denim- Skip bloomies or neimans and get your next pair of designer jeans from Raw Denim, a locally owned boutique. This country/rockstar chic boutique is owned by one of my good friends and offers the best selection of designer jeans in Atlanta and quite a few must have dresses and accessories!

Shaye Blue- I love nothing more than to see a young fashionista make it as a local designer. Shaye Blue has set the standard for local designs and definitely is high on my list of fav townies that are making it big. Shaye Blue is a great go to for sun dresses and trendy casual! Shay Blue is available at many local boutiques and online!

Hal’s Kitchen- If you are looking for a fun date night or night out with the girls you must check out Hal’s Kitchen in Sandy Springs. Hal’s Kitchen was started by two local chefs who are so talented in the kitchen and provide a fun interactive cooking experience. Each night is a different gourmet menu!

Laughing Skull Lounge- Need a good laugh to forget about the work week blues? Laughing Skull Lounge is the perfect excuse for a funny night on the town. Each week they have a different line up of comedians and if you want to try your luck at comedy check out open mic nights on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

It’s In Your Genes Fashion Show

“It’s in Your Genes,” sponsored by the Atlanta Jewish Gene Screen, is a denim fashion show featuring new looks from Atlanta’s most stylish jeans boutiques. Tickets for the event include an open beer and wine bar (for those 21 and older) and hors d’oeuvres, as well as a spectacular fashion event, DJ and dancing. Guests can upgrade to VIP for free parking, access to special lounge and private bar and reserved seating for the fashion show.

What do two fifty-four foot helicopters, thirty catering companies, dozens of performers and three football fields worth of film sets have in common?  The Next Cool Event would be the answer.

The press has been alerted, it is official The Next Cool Thing is coming back in 2012! The Next Cool Event, a spectacular display of the talented film industry professionals has tripled in size and will taking over the Atlanta Exposition Center (Three football fields) February 17 & 18, 2012.

In 2011 founder and producer, Barbara English, launched The Next Cool Thing in hopes to show film industry decision makers that everything they need for a first class production is right here in Georgia.

The event was a bigger sensation than anyone could have ever imagined.  Film makers, celebrities, executives, hipsters, trendsetters and socialites filled the westside warehouse to check out what was really behind the curtains of the Georgia Film Industry. The event had my vote as I walked the red carpet and strolled onto the set of  Sex and The City and then hopped on over to the seductive James Bond set and then through the trenches of Star Wars. The event was dotted with the upper cusp of Atlanta’s social buzzers and even a celebrity or two (Tyler Perry strolled the event incognito). My favorite sets were Six Feet Under, James Bond, Sex and The City and Black Swan.

What to expect this year: 

Three football fields of designer sets themed as iconic movies and television shows. Delicious food from over 30 of Atlanta’s best caterers. Surprises around every corner including non-stop performances through out the entire weekend.

Animal prints, literally: With leopard print always being a personal favorite, I love this fun yet somewhat silly trend.  Clothing with birds, butterflies, and other creatures were a top hit on the runway.

Metal Mania- Metallics: New Year’s Eve is not the only time to make a flashy statement.  Gold, silver, and even purple metallic clothing is a top trend in 2012.  If metallic garments are too over the top for you, wear metallic shoes or a shiny hand bag as a glitzy accent to spice up any outfit.  I am in love with the rose-colored Brian Atwood pumps pictured below.

THE “IT” ITEM

Pretty Peplum: You are probably thinking: what the heck is peplum?!  A Peplum is short ruffle or over skirt that sits at the waist and is attached to a garment.  This silhouette instantly creates an hourglass shape and can be seen on dresses, skirts, jackets, and blouses.  The trend has been a top hit on the red carpet

MAIN FOCUS

The Midsection: As I am shopping through Urban Outfitters, I can’t help but notice all of the cropped shirts and cut out dresses!  Top fashion designers are also indulging in this belly-baring trend.

White is the new Black: With the LBD (little black dress) always being a timeless classic, white is the perfect color for spring.  Dressing in white from head to toe, the color makes a simple outfit look fresh and chic.  I love the all-white pants suit.

Printed Jump Suits: This trend is for the bold and adventurous! The basic black jump suit is taking fashion to a whole new level.  The floral prints ranking as my top favorite, this is a great way to make a fashion statement with only one garment!
