Last Minute Thoughtful Gifts for Mom

donnalynnI love to celebrate Mother’s Day because I have the absolute best mom in the world! She is always there for me, she is caring and compassionate, deals with my craziness and has taught me to be a confident women.

If you are a busy bee like me and always shop last minute (sorry  mom-love you) I have a few quick and thoughtful ideas to make mom smile on Mothers Day!

Homemade Picnic in the Park

  • Get fancy with gourmet sandwiches (make them yourself or visit the sandwich artists at publix), mimosas, hummus, grab a blanket (or get a heavy duty table cloth from party city) and spend a few extra minutes in the kitchen making your mom’s favorite dessert. Top off this thoughtful day with a hand written card with the top 10 things you love about your mom!

All Mom’s Favorite Things

  • Start the day with making mom her favorite breakfast
  • Grab a few of your mom’s favorite movies  (or ones you used to watch together when you were little) and spend some quality time relaxing together
  • End the day with a trip to her favorite restaurant or cook her favorite meal
  • Make her smile with a gift basket of all her favorite bath and beauty products

A Box of Memories

  • Grab an old shoe box (make it look pretty-back to the days of Valentine’s Day card boxes)
  • Fill the box with old pictures and mementos from your childhood that remind you of your mom
  • Include a handmade coupon  book with special activities for mom (movie date, car wash, shopping day, home made dinner, etc)

Pictures Say Everything (my mom loves anything to do with photos)

If all else fails and you run out of time, I suggest a really nice hand written card telling her how much you love and appreciate her!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms!!! I hope you have a relaxing and special day!

xoxo

Jog ‘N Serve April 21

In the land of colorful, supertastic, muddy and glowing fun runs there is a new kid on the block that is serving up a dose of feel good community service combined with a little jogging!

MOTIF8_logo1Jog ‘N Serve, a community service driven fun run is just one of many upcoming events that will be launched by Motif8.  Motif8 is a new community organization that connects like-minded people who seek to prioritize fitness, fellowship, and faith. Motif8 currently is in the beta phase with big plans to launch a website and continue to grow it’s local community through monthly events.

Out of all the hundreds of events that pass through my desk each day I was really intrigued by this concept because it plays on the growing trend of fun runs but mainly aims to help the community.

The Motif8 crew will meet joggers at SafeHouse Outreach @ 10am on 4/21 to build some incredible PB&J and non-grilled cheese sandwiches. Around 11am, they will embark on a jogging journey in downtown Atlanta connecting and serving those that need it.  They have a planned route and anticipate wrapping up around 1pm, with a group lunch right after to refuel and connect.

2 OPTIONS FOR TICKETS:
• $5 gets you registered for the event and helps with paying for food, materials, and SafeHouse Outreach donation.
• $15 gets you a MOTIF8 t-shirt on top of that so you can jog with support ‘n style.

Wedding Buzz

Let the festivities and the nerves begin. In a few short days we will be 6 months from the wedding. The last few weeks have been filled with bridal expos, signing contracts, picking up my dress, selecting a bridesmaid dress, kicking my wedding workouts into overdrive and starting to fantasize about a honeymoon. Despite a few stressful road bumps Brennan and I are so excited. Last night we were so thankful to celebrate with all of our best friends at our very first shower! My bridesmaids put together one of the cutest couples showers I have ever seen!

I wanted to share some of my favorite displays from the last few expos and a few pictures from our shower. I promise I will be out of wedding mode for the next post :)

Eating my way through Tokyo

I am one of the most particular eaters alive.  I feared that I would be living on Think Thin Bars and Pop Tarts my entire stay in Tokyo. I was 100% wrong! We enjoyed french pastries on every corner and delicious traditional Japanese cuisine every night. If you ever go to Tokyo please take my recommendations and try the unique restaurants below!

Ohmatsuya Kura (6-6-19 Ginza): A secret gem even to most locals, Ohmatsuya Kura has only 2 tables. It is located on a side street in the Ginza neighborhood on the fifth floor of an ordinary building. The minute you crawl through the small door you are greeted by a waitress clad in traditional country clothing and your find yours in an old farmhouse atmosphere.

IMG_2969

This meal was based on the robatayaki style of cooking old world country food.  A chef prepares a 6 course meal in front of you. My favorite courses were the scallops, prawn and beef cooked in a leaf with traditional spices.  All menus were in Japanese so we left our palates in the hands of our chef. At one point Brennan was eating roasted bugs.

IMG_2959

This was our first meal in Tokyo and it definitely set the mood for the amazing dining experiences that were ahead.

IMG_2968

Shabusen (Core building 2nd Basement 5-8-20): Located in basement of one of the many multi story department stores, Shabusen, is known as one of the best Shabu-Shabu restaurants in town.  Shabu Shabu is a traditional form of cooking thinly sliced meats and vegetables in a pot of boiling savory broth. Sounds odd but it is simple and delicious

IMG_3021

They offer an English menu. Brennan and I both had the Prime Beef.

IMG_3020

Absolutely delicious! And rewarding to cook your own dinner!

IMG_3028

Inakaya: Located in the Roppongi neighborhood (known for its great restaurants and nightlife), this restaurant also offers Robatayaki but it is a completely different experience from Ohmatsuya Kura. Inakaya is recognized as the most reputable robatayaki restaurant in the world.

IMG_3096

Dinner is ordered by pointing to the items you want and the servers and chefs all repeat your order in unison to the entire restaurant. The chef cooks your item on the grill in front of him and delivers it to you on a long paddle. I tried Kobe beef for the first time and it absolutely melted in mouth.

IMG_3073

Brennan ordered mini crabs, which I was a little scared to eat but they were surprisingly delicious with a salty crunchy flavor.

IMG_3078

The chefs were full of fun and made the experience. It is no wonder that this restaurant plays hosts to A-list celebrities like Demi, Ashton, Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Samuel L Jackson and the list goes on! This was by far the best dinner and dining experience Brennan and I have ever had!

IMG_3105

Tengu (3-20-5 Shinjuku): Located close to Shibuya, this fun casual pub offers small plates similar to tapas.  This was a great meal to nurse my hang over from the night before in Roppongi.

IMG_3135

Maisen (4-8-5 Jingumae): We never would have tried Maisen except for the fact that it was recommended by friend. Maisen is serving up tonkatsu for more than 25 years. A fun fact- Maisen occupies a former pre- World War II public bathhouse. It is tucked away in a trendy neighborhood with the most amazing boutiques.

IMG_3148

Fried Pork was the speciality on 90% of the tables. It was surprisingly delicious.

IMG_3146

Other notable good eats & drinks:

  • The Lion in Ginza, a german beer hall, offers a loud and fun upbeat atmosphere and great beers
  • Geronimo is a tiny shot bar in Rappongi with friendly bartenders and a great crowd.
  • We lived on Parisian pastry shops that were located on every corner.

Hold the Corn, Gamsahabnida PyeongChang

“Gamsahabnida” means Thank you in Korean.

The past 5 days have been absolutely amazing. Words cannot describe how proud I am of Zach. This week had an amazing purpose and created life long memories for 3000 athletes from all over the world! It was amazing to feel the energy and competitive spirit from the athletes, their families and coaches. 11,000 people made the journey to PyeongChang, South Korea to celebrate!

I was honored to be able to cheer for Zach and Team USA! Zach took home a gold medal yesterday!

As we prepare to travel to Tokyo in the morning I thought I would leave you with a few things about PyeongChang, the future site of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

When you order a cheese pizza it comes with corn…. Not my favorite but compared to the other cuisine it was delicious

photo-152

They keep their Christmas decorations up for months – Christmas trees are everywhere!

photo-156

They offer hot coffee in aluminum cans at the quickie marts – And it’s really good!

photo-151Apparently it is ok to have nap time in a public food court

photo-153

PyeongChang is definitely a rural mountain town with a lot of work to do before they host the Winter Olympics but the people are very nice and accommodating. Just like Seoul, this is one of the safest, cleanest cities in the world!

So excited for Tokyo!!!!!!
